Fall Is Peel Season: Why Autumn Is the Best Time for a Chemical Peel
Summer was fun. Your skin may have a different opinion.
Months of pool days, beach trips and a little too much time without reapplying SPF tend to show up in the fall. You might see new dark spots, an uneven tone, rough texture or a dullness that no serum seems to fix. The good news is that fall is the best time of year to do something about it, and chemical peels are one of my favorite ways to get there.
Why fall, specifically?
A chemical peel removes the damaged outer layers of skin so healthier skin can come through. Freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to the sun for a while afterward, and that's why timing matters.
In the fall:
You're spending less time outside. Fewer beach weekends and pool days mean less intense sun exposure while your skin heals.
The sun is lower and the days are shorter. UV doesn't disappear in October (more on SPF below), but it's easier to protect healing skin than in July.
You're correcting damage that already happened. Summer is when pigment and sun damage build up. Fall is when we clean it up.
The timing works for the holidays. Start a series now and your skin is at its best for holiday photos, parties and family gatherings.
What a chemical peel actually does
Peels use acids to loosen the bonds between dead, dull skin cells so they shed and make way for newer ones. Depending on the peel, that can:
Fade sun spots, freckling and uneven pigment
Smooth rough texture and soften the look of pores
Brighten dull, tired-looking skin
Help with breakouts and congestion
Help your skincare work better once the buildup is gone. If you've read my post on why acids are the secret to actually absorbing your skincare, you know how much I love this part.
Most of the peels I do are superficial peels. They work on the outermost layers, with a few days of flaking rather than weeks of downtime. You won't be hiding at home, but you might skip the big event the day after your peel.
This isn't a one-and-done treatment
One peel will give you a nice glow. A series is where you see real change. For most people I recommend a series of 2–3 peels spaced a few weeks apart. That lessens superficial pigment, smooths texture and gives you a more even, luminous tone.
Think of it a bit like working out. One session feels great, but consistency is what changes things.
Peels for skin of color: go slower, get better results
This is the part too many places get wrong. Deeper skin tones can absolutely benefit from peels, but they're more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which means dark spots that appear after irritation or injury to the skin. A peel that's too aggressive can create the very problem you came in to fix.
For my patients with deeper skin tones, that means:
Choosing the right acid and strength for your skin, not a one-size-fits-all protocol
Prepping your skin at home for a few weeks beforehand to calm pigment-producing cells
Starting gentler and building up
If you've read my post on microneedling for skin of color, you know this is something I care a lot about. The nuance matters.
Homework before your peel
The best peel results start at home. Before your appointment:
Wear SPF every single day. I mean it. Here's my complete sunscreen guide if you need help choosing one.
Pause retinoids and exfoliating products for a few days beforehand. I'll give you exact timing at your consult.
Tell me if you get cold sores, have used isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past year, are pregnant or nursing, or have a sunburn. All of these change the plan.
After your peel
Expect tightness, then light flaking, usually within a few days
Don't pick or peel! Let it shed on its own
Keep it simple: a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer and SPF
Hold off on actives until your skin tells you it's ready
Follow the aftercare and you will be golden.
Pair it for even better results
Peels work well alongside other treatments. Depending on your goals, I may pair a peel series with dermaplaning for extra smoothness, or with our Aerolase Elite Neo laser for redness, pigment and overall skin quality. There's no need to do everything at once. We can build on your results gradually.
Ready to undo summer?
If your skin is looking a little tired after the summer, now is the perfect time to start. Every peel at Refinery starts with a conversation about your skin, your history and your goals, so you get the right peel for you, not just the most popular one.
I look forward to seeing you, and as always, I'm happy to answer any questions before your visit.
