Why Acids Are the Secret to Actually Absorbing Your Skincare
You've invested in a beautiful serum like a growth factor, a peptide complex, or an exosome product. You're applying it every single night. And yet... the results feel underwhelming.
Here's what no one told you: it's not always about what you apply. It's about whether your skin can actually receive it.
That's where acids come in. And before your mind goes to peels and downtime, let's clear something up, we're not talking about aggressive resurfacing. We're talking about smart, strategic acid use that opens the door so your actives can actually do their job.
“Skincare that can’t penetrate is just expensive moisturizer sitting on top of dead skin.”
The Barrier Problem: Why Skin Is Designed to Keep Things Out
Your skin is one of the most sophisticated defense systems in the human body. The outermost layer = the stratum corneum. This layer is made up of dead skin cells (corneocytes) held together by lipids in a tight "brick and mortar" structure. Its entire job is to keep foreign substances from getting in.
That includes environmental toxins, bacteria, irritants and unfortunately, the serums, growth factors, and actives you're spending real money on.
The average molecule in a skincare product is too large to slip through the stratum corneum on its own. Without a little help, most of what you apply stays on the surface, evaporates, or gets washed off and never actually reaches the living skin cells where it could create meaningful change.
This is where exfoliation and specifically, acid-based exfoliation, becomes less of a "nice to have" and more of a foundation.
How Acids Enhance Penetration: The Science Made Simple
Acids work as chemical exfoliants. Rather than physically scrubbing the skin (which can cause micro-tears and uneven cell removal), acids dissolve the protein bonds holding dead skin cells together, allowing them to release naturally and revealing the fresher, more permeable skin underneath.
When dead cell buildup is reduced, two things happen that matter enormously for ingredient absorption:
The physical barrier thins slightly, reducing the distance actives need to travel.
Skin hydration increases, temporarily swelling intercellular channels and creating more pathways for ingredient movement.
Studies have shown that regular use of alpha hydroxy acids can increase the penetration depth of certain actives by a meaningful margin and for products like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides, even modest improvements in absorption can significantly change outcomes.
AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs: Which Acid Does What
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic
AHAs are water-soluble, meaning they work on the surface of the skin. They're excellent for addressing texture, tone, fine lines, and dullness and they're the most effective at priming skin for deeper ingredient absorption.
Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of the AHAs, giving it the deepest penetration and the strongest effect on absorption enhancement.
Lactic acid is larger, gentler, and also hydrating which is a great bridge for sensitive or reactive skin.
Mandelic acid is the most gentle of the AHAs, antibacterial in nature, and ideal for acne-prone or hyperpigmented skin.
Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): Salicylic Acid
BHAs are oil-soluble, which means they can travel through sebum and penetrate into the pore lining, something AHAs can't do. Salicylic acid is the hero here. It's anti-inflammatory, comedolytic (unclogs pores), and incredibly effective for oily and acne-prone skin types.
When it comes to penetration enhancement specifically, BHAs improve the absorption of oil-soluble actives and help clear the congestion that blocks follicular pathways.
Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs): Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid
PHAs are the newest generation of chemical exfoliants have a larger molecular size which means slower penetration, reduced irritation potential, and a gentler exfoliation experience. They're ideal for sensitive skin, compromised barriers, or anyone just starting to incorporate acids. They still improve absorption, just with a kinder hand.
“At Refinery, we don’t pick acids randomly. We choose based on your skin type, your goals, and what we’re trying to help absorb. That’s the multimodality approach.”
Strategic Layering: How to Actually Use This in Your Routine
The goal isn't to stack acids on top of your actives in the same routine because that's a recipe for irritation and a compromised barrier. The goal is to use acids consistently so your skin is always in a state of optimal receptivity.
Here's how to think about it:
Option 1: Acids on Off-Nights, Actives Every Night
Use your exfoliating acid (AHA or BHA) 2–3 nights per week. On the remaining nights, apply your targeted actives — retinol, peptides, growth factors, vitamin C — to skin that's freshly cleared from recent exfoliation. The benefits of the acid linger for days, not just hours.
Option 2: Low-Percentage Acids Daily as Prep
Some formulas (like toners or essences with 5–8% lactic or glycolic acid) are designed for daily use at lower concentrations. Used before serums, these create a lightly prepped canvas without the intensity of a dedicated exfoliant night.
Option 3: In-Office Treatments + At-Home Maintenance
Professional chemical peels and treatments like microneedling or microchanneling create controlled channels in the skin that dramatically enhance the absorption of serums applied immediately after. This is exactly why we apply PRP, exosomes, and growth factors post-treatment — the skin is primed to receive them at a level topical application alone can't replicate.
What We Apply After Acids at Refinery
If you're going to the effort of preparing your skin with acids, what you apply next matters. These are the actives we love to pair with a well-prepped skin barrier:
Plated Daily Serum (Renewosome® exosome technology): exosomes carry bioactive signals deep into skin — and they work harder when the surface is cleared.
Isdin Retinal Advanced: a retinaldehyde formula that converts to retinoic acid in the skin for powerful renewal with less irritation — absorbs more effectively on acid-prepped skin..
Hydrinity HA Renewing Serum: hyaluronic acid absorbs dramatically better on freshly exfoliated skin, pulling water into the layers where it actually matters.
SkinBetter Science Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum: a powerhouse antioxidant and brightening serum that penetrates more effectively when the surface layer is cleared.
A Note on Barrier Protection
Acid use done well does not damage your skin barrier, it refines it. But acid use done carelessly can. Signs you've overdone it: tight, stinging, flaky, or persistently reactive skin.
The rules are simple:
Always wear SPF the day after acid use. Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV-induced damage and hyperpigmentation.
Don't mix multiple acids in one routine without guidance.
If you're new to acids, start low and slow. 1–2x per week with a mild lactic acid before working up.
And if you're not sure what's right for your skin? That's exactly what a consultation is for.

Yes. By removing the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface, chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs reduce the physical barrier that prevents active ingredients from reaching living skin cells. Regular acid use keeps skin in a more receptive state.
-
Glycolic acid (an AHA) has the smallest molecular size and deepest penetration, making it the most effective for priming absorption. Lactic acid is a gentler option, and PHAs are best for sensitive skin types
-
Some low-percentage formulas are designed for daily use, but most people benefit most from 2–3x per week use to exfoliate without over-stripping the barrier.
